Wonder Inc. was a student film project I worked on in order to complete my Diploma in Screen Design. The film was completed over the course of 2 weekend workshops involving all the screen design students as well as volunteer actors and crew members. The story focuses on a man looking for his sister in a world where people have extraordinary gifts, supernatural powers, that are exploited by large corporations for financial gain. He uses his connections within Wonder Inc. to track down his sister and bring her home.
The Wonder Inc. project was a very enlightening and constructive process towards my education, it allowed me to experience working on a soundstage in a collaborative environment. As a group, we worked together to build the world of Wonder Inc. discussing the context of the story and how the production and set design would bring the story to life. Benefitting from the abundance of resources, props and set dressing that were all available through the school, we had the ability to be very attentive to detail and create several extremely immersive sets.
DESIGN DRAWINGS & CONCEPT SKETCHES
As part of the program, we were required to create several concept sketches to share our vision on the short film before we filming. It is interesting to see the differences, and similarities, between the sketches and the final filmed version.
Concept sketches are an element of my work that I am confident in using as a communication tool and something I will continue to develop. Many of the more recent projects have had such short pre-production periods that sketches to this level are never completed, something that I wish to change in the future.
