Song Without Words was a Feature Film produced by the ‘Noah’s Art Movies’ company. The story focuses on 3 protagonists, each with their own personal journey influenced by Artificial intelligence, whether it’s communicating with a loved one, fear of the future, or breaking boundaries of what love truly is. Song Without Words is a poetic film that captures the human emotion even when our world seems destined to forget.
As the Production Designer, I was tasked with building 3 separate stories that all linked together with poetic synergy. Common themes and visual cues would assist in linking these stories, however the key to distinguishing the stories was through colour and style, this would be the defining design feature throughout the film.
With a micro-budget restricting the creative licence, I was able to build several sets that focused on important storytelling with a minimalist approach.
ANNIE’S APARTMENT
One of the main sets featured in the film was ‘Annie’s Apartment’. The minimalist approach would highlight the struggles of lower income living, where Annie would feel unsafe within her own home.
It was important to use colour to highlight different characters in this film. In this instance, Autumn colours were used for Annie to emphasise her desaturated emotions, solitude, but with a hint of positive optimism so the audience can support her struggles. In contrast, the memory of her lost son is brought to life with primary colours, specifically blue tones to focus on his innocence.
