Rage is a Feature Film produced by Prima Lux Films. Following a fatal home invasion, the race is on to find the intruder and bring him into custody before the victims take matters into their own hands. Rage takes the audience on a torturous journey as the investigation leads to many dead ends and questionable decisions made along the way.
Rage challenged me to think holistically when it came to creating the world. As many of the scenes where set in a real environment, the potential to push creative boundaries were limited. I used this opportunity to work on triggering emotional responses through the use of colour and design throughout the film.
Convey Emotion Through Design
Throughout the film, there were several moments that required a deeper understanding of design and how it would influence the audience’s reaction. Forcing empathy towards the scenes, specifically the characters and their actions. Focusing on the use of colour and tone was a key design decision throughout the film to assist the audience in understanding the emotional state of the situation at hand. For example, the use of the colour Red was primarily used when there was a moment of fore-shadowing before a moment of destruction or extreme violence.
Another example of using colour to influence emotional reactions was the wardrobe choice for the main character, Noah Tate. I instructed the costume supervisor to dress Noah Tate in a progressively darker shade of shirt/jacket as he slowly slips into a state of madness and mental aggression to the point of no return.
