Love Over Money was an inspiring Documentary about the son, and heir, to the Baskins & Robbins throne, John Robbins. Following his life’s journey, how he turned his back on the fortune, only to become one of the pioneers for health in America, writing a best seller ‘A Diet For New America’, and finding ways to express his love of life with his family and everyone around him.
My second Documentary project, I found this project to be very inspiring and unique in how we produced the film. I was brought on towards the later stages, when the interviews with John Robbins and most of the editing for the film had been completed. With only 3 days to plan, I was required to create several original re-enactment scenes to synchronise with John’s story. The producers and writers already had a plan in place for the specific scenes, which allowed me to focus on specific design elements and build the scenes efficiently.
Studio Space
Filming took place at Sydney Props, a prop rental facility that also operated several pre-made studio spaces we were able to occupy. General set pieces such as a forest, a 1950’s diner, and an empty bedroom were just some of the spaces we had access to. This space assisted with the filming process greatly, not only were we able to use existing room spaces to our advantage, only requiring set dressing, but we had an unlimited access to Sydney Props catalogue.
The fact pace of the filming meant myself and my team were required to pre-dress several rooms before the film crew took over, constantly staying 3 steps ahead. Often, we would turn a room over once filming wrapped, doubling down on the space for a different scene.
The advantage of being in the same building was the accessibility to the sets while also being on call for the film crew team with any last minute adjustments.
The space really inspired my own future endeavours, a space with a diverse range of set spaces is something I have constantly looked into creating on my own.
