Last Man Left Alive was a Music Video filmed in 2022. The Project is presented as a 15min short film for the band ‘The Ugly Kings’, where a man is struggles to maintain his sanity and the will to live on a homemade spacecraft drifting in space.
I was originally brought on to help build the set structure and framework, however after connecting with the Production Designer and Director, I ended up staying onboard for the duration of the pre-production helping out with the remaining builds, the scenic art work and adding finishing touches to the set dressing.
Working in Limited Space
The entire film set was constructed in the Director’s living room. A challenge in itself to create a working film set within tight constraints, but also challenging to find a way to make a spaceship look and feel much grander while only using one set.
There were several stages to the build, including the main living quarters, the cockpit, and the exterior spaceship used with VFX. There were many moving parts to this build, where we would pre-fabricate most of the walls outside in the backyard before shipping them inside to create the set. As each piece was moved into place, the set began to take shape, which helped bring the vision to life, but also made operations much more difficult
This project taught me a lot about how to be flexible with a film set, how to make the most of limited space and how to plan ahead to allow the set to be shifted as required. Unfortunately lessons learnt from making many mistakes wth the construction process.
